The Angolan Civil War is a very strange period of history for me. By all logic it doesn't make sense that there are not only two large, powerful communist parties but that they were fighting each other - with one even being backed by the West of all people. I wonder if they would still do test scores, advanced classes, elite universities, and other meritocratic based things that position some people above others in their human development.

Would it be possible for China today to return to Mao-era public housing without harming its economy? Given the rapid deflation of property prices in China, could this be a first step toward the long-term goal of providing free housing?

It sounds dumb to me to switch to an entirely different platform that's suppose to be a "better" lemmy instead of just contributing to Lemmy and making it better for everyone. I'm sure there would be a good reason to go through all this trouble and I'm pretty sure its ideological (with the lemmy devs being ML)

Not in the sense that I want to start a business and exploit people. I am probably misinterpreting a lot of the ideas of socialism/communism as I feel that if I think about making more money (investments, switching jobs, vying for a promotion) that I'm going against the core ideas and values of communism/socialism. I've mostly read/listened that to be a communist/socialist you are putting your community first and thinking of other people while trying to make more money is, to me, inherently individualistic. ... read full post
