The other day, I thought of a quote I heard, by the mention in the title:

It is a long Baptism into the seas of humankind, my daughter. Better immersion and in pain than to live untouched. Yet how will you sustain?

A search mentions she was a "socialist" and a few personal struggles, and there's a passing mention in People wiki that says she was socialist-minded, here: https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/Library:Not_"A_Nation_of_Immigrants"
