My annoying libertarian teen coworker who "hates commies" suddenly had his opinion of Mamdani improved when I told him Mamdani was an Arsenal fan.

"Oh he's a gooner! Never mind I take back everything bad I said about him. I bet fucking Cuomo supports Tottenham."

We are Americans by the way.

I roll my eyes at a lot of the complaints about him here, because my expectations for anyone chewed up and spit out of the American political machine are very very low. I’ve only seen improvements from the American default honestly. I’m from Lebanon, I can only see his rise to fame (and people’s positive reactions) as an indicator that the US isn’t as hopeless as it can look.

Do you understand how depressing it is to hear every single person with power in the US, the world’s biggest military, talk about you like you’re a gardening pest that needs to be Agent Oranged to make way for more kibbutzes. That any opposition to that idea is a perversion of human decency. Harm reduction isn’t the cure but more harm isn’t good either. Lighten up people. Electoralism can’t be revolutionary but neither is handing more and more power to the worst people on earth. I live in a horrific feudal society, over which is stretched a pungent, decaying skinsuit of democracy and liberalism, I’ll take a Mamdani figure (or the popular support around his campaign and subsequent cautious optimism) any day. I swear to god some of you guys would have taken one look at the Bolsheviks in 1916 and called them a bunch of feds. The guy doesn’t matter in the long run, but people getting over their internalized McCarthyism in the McAmazon Grumman kingdom absolutely does say something.

Anyway, my biggest gripe with him is that he’s an Arsenal fan. Irredeemable club literally born out of the British Empire’s arms manufacturing industry, got elected to the League instead of earning their way in, and fucking moving to North London on our turf (I have never stepped foot in England or Europe in my entire life). Fuck off back to Woolwich North London is ours COYS

(Sports tribalism is fun! Football is very entertaining!)

Yeah, he's a little creepy.

I got a mild soft spot for him cuz I used to be a little edgelord creep myself and he at least as a decent sense of humor, but I doubt I can "fix him". I'm trying though.

I have not been able to fix a single libertarian that I know of. If you find something that works with them please do let me know.

Conservative right wingers? Yeah, fixed a few. Libertarians? Seriously a different problem.

You can't really "fix" them, they have to be open to developing empathy and put themselves in a position where it happens.

But they're gonna run out of their treats sooner or later, then they will be forced in that position. That's a moment they will be vulnerable and can be influenced more easily, they might just go back to being a lib once things stabilize tho'

I find there are two types of self-identified “libertarians.” The first is people who know what “libertarian” actually means and live in a complete fantasy world where “voting with your wallet” is the most effective form of political activism. The second type of libertarian strongly believes in personal freedom and just apes their stances on governance from their parents or talking heads.

The second can be educated depending on their level of worship towards wherever they got their political ideas from. The first group isn’t even worth talking to.
