Seems misleading. They didn't have moss growing outside the station, they had spores in an "exposure" box out there for 9 months, then sent them to earth and were able to grow moss from the spores.

I think the image of the ISS completely covered in moss growing in the vacuum of space conveyed that point well enough, you might be reading to much into it.
