The thing to remember is that we have, practically, a mere instant's worth of solar data. We've only been really engaging in serious solar astronomy for what, a few centuries? And geological records are only really solid data for extremely strong events and trends.
The way I heard someone put it is, that's like saying "We're going to predict hurricanes mostly based on a single afternoon."
