More than 100,000 people marched through Cuenca, a city in southern Ecuador, on Sept. 16, demanding that federal authorities revoke an environmental license for a gold mining project that may impact an important freshwater source.
The Loma Larga mining project, run by Canadian mining company Dundee Precious Metals, borders the 3,200-hectare (7,900-acre) Quimsacocha National Recreation Area, located within the UNESCO Macizo del Cajas Biosphere Reserve. Quimsacocha is a central source of clean freshwater in the Andean páramo tundra located approximately 30 kilometers (18.5 miles) southeast of Cuenca.
As a Canadian I support this protest. We should not be destroying anyone’s water supply and shame on the company for doing so.

Yeah, but 14 million tons of gold, silver, and copper. Surely the people being poisoned would agree if they understood how much money that meant, right?

It's a mining company that is registered in Canada as it is a very favorable jurisdiction for mining companies. This is not the first instance of Canadian mining companies fucking up the environment in the global south and it wont be the last. Im no expert in international law but I feel like the Canadiam government could be doing more to discourage this kind of behavior from Canadian companies.
