Are they usually around this early? I was planning to gather some this year but I read they mostly start showing up around late September.

Nope, everything seems to be early this year. I was shocked to find Hedgehogs and Hericium in July, we don't see those until at least September here.

Not sure where you're at but in the PNW they peak in the fall but they can also be found year-round.

I don't know the details. I do know that preparing it has a few steps to remove it through boiling. And even then, there's residual content. Amanita is not to trifled with without proper guidance, and even then there's risk and side effects.

Stick to psylocybe, as long as you are positive of the ID, you'd need to eat a gargantuan amount to have it actually poison you. And you don't get the runs.
