How does this form? Do the arms branch out and then rejoin? Was it some kind of "bubble" that developed various holes?

We have those in NW Florida (Emerald Coast, Hurricane Coast, Redneck Riviera)! You didn't smell it? I just had to, and oh boy, regrets, I've had a few. It smells like shit, except worse and more intense. Weird thing is, you have to get really close, nose right at it, or you would never notice.

Here's the one I smelled (right). I also find the more lacy versions like yours but don't have pics.
