This is a similar device to a meshtastic by KV4P, but since it's only for licensed amateurs, it can do one watt, where I assume meshtastic is probably limited to part 97, 0.1 watts.

I think since I have my amateur license, it may be worth me getting both. I don't know if it exists or if it is possible, but if there were a map with the general location of nodes, that would be super handy, because I would like to know if there are any other users of meshtastic in my city before I would want to purchase one.

There is the Meshmap. I'm not sure it's complete, but it could give you a rough idea. It's usually a good idea to search meshtastic along with your city name, and hopefully there's a community site for any active projects.

Okay, so according to that mesh map there is a single node in my city and it was self-reported 20 hours ago. It says it's eight meters above ground, which isn't great, but that's not terrible either.
