The discovery centers around teeth: that of a member of the genus Homo, of which we are a part, found next to the tooth of Australopithecus, the last in a line of apes that became humans. The team of paleontologists who found the teeth are following protocol and not inferring anything about how the two species interacted, but the fact is that the Homo tooth was the older of the two, showing that human evolution wasn’t linear. ... read full post

Because khipu were so vital to the Inca government, and because the khipu itself is such a sophisticated way of recording numbers, colonial writers decided that these tools must be the exclusive knowledge of a very specialized, elite class of bureaucrats. But a recent study, analyzing hair from a khipu made around 1498 CE, suggests that even common folk had a good grasp of this intricate way of recording numbers.

An international student discovered a piece of 9th century gold just 90 minutes into her first archaeological excavation.
The early medieval object was found by Newcastle University student Yara Souza at a recent excavation in Redesdale, Northumberland.
The find is approximately four centimetres (1.5 inches) long and has a decorative finial at one end.
