Rome, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) The work being carried out today by the Cuban Medical Brigade in the southern region of Calabria, Italy, was recognized during the conference “For Public Welfare and Health: A Concept of Service to the Citizen,” held in this capital.

The event, which took place the day before at the regional headquarters of the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL), was attended by the Cuban ambassador to Italy, Mirta Granda, as well as Andrea Filippi, leader of that trade union organization, and Marco Papacci, president of the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (Anaic).

Granda referred to the agreement signed in July 2022 between the Calabria region and the Cuban Medical Services (CSMC), with the purpose of addressing the serious health shortages in that area of Italy, and asserted that doctors from his country are the best ambassadors of that nation in the world.

This Cuban solidarity work in Italy, in the field of health, is a continuation of that provided in 2020 by brigades of the Henry Reeve Medical Contingent in the northern cities of Crema and Turin, during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first 51 specialists arrived in Calabria in December 2022, and another 120 were added in August of the following year, while 106 joined at the beginning of 2024, then 66 joined the group in October and finally 48 were added who arrived at the beginning of May 2025.

Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, free healthcare for the population and aid to other nations have been priorities, despite the difficult situation facing the Island, a victim of the economic, commercial and financial blockade by the United States, he noted.

The diplomat added that the work of Cuban doctors and their collaboration abroad is carried out respecting the principles of altruism, humanism and international solidarity, enshrined in Article 16 of her country's Constitution.

Dr. Andrés Gamboa, who attended the conference representing the Cuban health professionals providing healthcare in Calabria, referred to the positive results of the work they are doing in 27 hospitals in the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia.

The Calabrian population respects and appreciates the services provided by the more than 350 Cuban doctors in 23 specialties, who are mainly present in the places where they are most needed, Gamboa said.

Also present at the event were, among others, Pino Scarpelli, a member of the national secretariat of Anaic, as well as Enzo Pescatori, a member of that organization and of the MediCuba Europe Association, in addition to the Italian deputy Andrea Quartini, of the Five Star Movement (M5S).

The president of Anaic stated in his speech that the Cuban health system “is based on a universalist and community approach”, and constitutes an experience that should be assimilated because, despite its complexities, “it has placed at the center the idea of medical care as a human right”.
