In the context of grifters like Elon, I'd agree because he'd use another earth to exploit more people with less eyes watching. In the context of socialist China and other like-minded efforts about space, I think it is more about exploration, discovery, and sustainability. It's not as though China is abandoning sustainability and advancement at home, while putting everything into space. Space is just one area of focus among many. And there is a pressing motive to want to find other habitable places, considering climate change is a real threat to the sustainability of earth, with the world order lagging behind on needed global changes and climate change being such that every major country needs to back the efforts, not just some. I don't think space is going to save us from climate change, but it could teach us more about sustainable resource management and habitation possibilities, if it's being explored by institutions that actually have that as a priority.
