Cuba inaugurates solar park with Chinese donation of 120 MW

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel inaugurated the "Martyrs of Barbados II" solar park on Wednesday, November 12, in the municipality of Guanajay, Artemisa province, thus concluding the first stage of the donation from the People's Republic of China , equivalent to 120 megawatts in its two parts.

The facility was connected to the National Electrical System , joining six other projects of the same name located in Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, Matanzas, and Pinar del Río. During the ceremony, the Cuban president toured the facilities and highlighted the efficiency of the project's execution.

The Cuban presidency clarified via social media that "this phase corresponds to the 35 MW project, which includes seven 5 MW solar parks ." It also reported that a "second phase of installation" totaling 85 MW is currently underway, comprising thirteen 5 MW parks and two 10 MW parks , with energy storage systems equivalent to 20% of each park's capacity.

For his part, the Chinese ambassador to Cuba, Hua Xin, explained that this solar plant will allow for savings of approximately 18,000 tons of imported fuel annually, equivalent to seven million dollars. “The efficiency achieved by the Chinese and Cuban companies involved marks a new stage in cooperation between both countries in the field of clean energy , ” he stated.

The diplomat also emphasized that "the strategic significance of this project is profound and practical ," and underscored the social benefits of a clean and reliable electricity supply for the population.

Hua Xin emphasized that “bilateral cooperation in the energy sector remains firm and constant ,” and mentioned other ongoing projects that reinforce China’s commitment to Cuba’s sustainable development.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Deborah Rivas , conveyed “on behalf of the Cuban Government, Party and people, our deepest and most sincere gratitude to China for the arduous efforts made to execute this project in the shortest possible time.”

The “Martyrs of Barbados ” solar park is part of a comprehensive energy transition program driven by collaboration between the two nations.

Cuban authorities also acknowledged the prompt response of the Chinese government in the recovery from the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa , with donations of food, coils of galvanized steel for the production of roofs, mattresses and solar lights, which will benefit the victims.
