I wonder what's up with all the two story buildings i keep seeing the DPRK build in recent years. Are these apartment buildings with separate apartments on each of the two floors or are they single family units with two floors? Because apartment buildings with only two floors seems very weird to me.
I'm just not used to seeing it. Traditionally you see mostly four or five stories (like in the top photo) in socialist style housing when you want to avoid making the apartment building so tall that you would need an elevator.
Is there a problem with zoning that they want to keep the height low for aesthetic reasons or do Koreans just really hate having to go up more than one flight of stairs?
I get building single story individual homes with a little garden plot in the more rural or suburban areas, i've seen some pictures and videos of that sort of development in the DPRK and while that's not my favorite i understand it, but you'd think if you're doing apartment buildings anyway you may as well just build a couple more floors than just two.

Since i am not super familiar with cities of DPRK, my thought is maybe the area is less populated, so not as much a need for larger occupancy buildings?

Yeah maybe. Anyhow these look really nice. Nicer than where i live that's for sure.

Yeah! I really hope they have a thick sheet if concrete in between above units and lower units, this way sounds doesn't disturb other residents.

My guess is that these are two separate apartments. One in each floor. An example is the image below:

See the three story variant there looks much more "normal" to me. I don't know what it is about apartment buildings with only two floors that gives me that off-putting uncanny valley feeling...

I haven't been posting too much news about housing from the DPRK because it is just too much! As an example, this is just one week:
