The Spanish courts have charged three Sidenor executives with alleged genocide for selling steel to an Israeli arms company, amid the massacre in Gaza.
The judge of the National Court — who oversees the resolutions of the State Administration — Francisco de Jorge announced on Friday that he has opened an investigation for crimes of smuggling and participation by complicity in a crime against humanity or genocide against the president of Sidenor, José Antonio Jainaga Gómez, and two other executives for the sale of steel consignments to the company Israel Military Industries (IMSI).
The sale, the judge added, was made "with full knowledge that the company is a manufacturer of weapons, both heavy and light, and that the material sold would be used to manufacture weapons."
Although pressure forced the company to stop selling steel to the Israeli firm, the investigation had already begun following the complaint filed by the Palestinian Community Association of Catalonia-Santa Terra, but had remained secret until now. The three suspects in this case have been summoned to testify before the judge as suspects on November 12.
Judge De Jorge is investigating how Sidenor allegedly sold steel to the Israeli company without requesting the corresponding authorization from Pedro Sánchez's government and without registering it.
According to the ruling, "both due to the information published daily in the press and on television, as well as the provisional criminal classification attributed to these events by the International Criminal Court and the complaints filed by the UN Special Rapporteur, Francesca Albanese, and by UNRWA, among other individuals and United Nations agencies."
These are the first known charges of complicity in genocide in Spain.
Meanwhile, a new United Nations report reveals that more than 60 countries are complicit in the “collective crime” of enabling Israel's genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The draft report, titled “Gaza Genocide: A Collective Crime,” prepared by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, was released Monday and called the genocide in Gaza a “collective crime, sustained by the complicity of influential third states that have enabled Israel’s long-standing and systemic violations of international law.”
Israel agreed to a ceasefire agreement in Gaza on October 10 after two years in which it has killed more than 68,000 Palestinians and injured more than 170,000, amid allegations that its operations amounted to genocide.
