For a long time, China continued to play with western tech because it was convenient and allowed them to invest elsewhere in more important matters. Recently, the west has clearly demonstrated a willingness to use its tech to further its aims. China, seeing the obvious writing on the wall, is making the smart move and investing in more sovereign technology. I hope it works flawlessly and even spreads to other countries that aren't west dominated/aligned.
