Unión Eléctrica is advancing a strategic investment program to strengthen its energy mix, with the construction of 51 solar farms. Of these, 32 are already synchronized with the National Electric System (SEN). Additionally, four battery storage systems have been contracted to compensate for the intermittency of photovoltaic generation.
The installation of seven wind farms donated by China, each with a 5 MW capacity, is expected to be completed in October. Experts estimate that by the end of 2025, solar generation will represent nearly 10% of the national grid. Currently, this source already contributes between 500 and 600 MW during the day, playing a key role in reducing daytime blackouts.
On the television program Mesa Redonda, engineer Ovel Concepción Díaz, director of Generation with Renewable Sources, explained that, to date, 35 photovoltaic parks have been completed, with a cumulative capacity of 715 MW. These have generated 429,320 MWh, which would have required the consumption of 111,623 tons of fossil fuels.
Solar energy's share of daily demand coverage is currently 9%, a significant increase from the 2% recorded in January. Between four and five new parks are synchronized each month. Solar generation peaks between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., replacing significant capacity during this time.
Among the programs underway is a 1,000 MW project, with 21.87 MW wind farms in all provinces. Currently, work is underway on 19 of these wind farms, with the goal of completing them within the current year, which would add 415 MW and exceed the target.
To stabilize the system, four 50 MW energy storage systems are being installed, located in Havana, Holguín, and Granma. These will help manage power variability, correct frequency disturbances, and reduce fluctuations.
Regarding the Chinese donation of 120 MW, which includes 22 wind farms, it is divided into two stages. The first, with 35 MW and seven wind farms, has already been assembled and three are synchronized; the remaining wind farms are planned to be synchronized in October. The second stage, with 15 wind farms, includes integrated storage systems and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
Beyond the solar program, progress is being made on the Herradura 1 Wind Farm (33 MW), with the goal of completing civil construction this year. The Alacranes small hydroelectric plant in Villa Clara is also progressing, with 26% completion and planned for completion by 2026.
In rural electrification, a donation of 5,000 photovoltaic systems was completed. Other programs include a European Union program for six mountain communities and the Ciénaga de Zapata, and a Canadian donation for 502 systems in Holguín.
Staff training is ongoing, with courses abroad and in Cuba, including diplomas from universities. The logistics process has been intense, receiving more than 7,000 containers this year, which are transported directly from the port to the construction site for immediate installation, thanks to a joint effort by all involved.
We can do it. We can end the US hegemony on energy together.

There are a lot of solidarity organizations in Canada and EU. These orgs pool resources to do all of these donations. Another big reminder for everyone that solidarity is crucial to defeat imperialism and to aid the ones that resist the imperialist attacks.
