Ouagadougou, September 21, 2025 (AIB) - The Italian capital paid tribute to the President of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987 and father of the Burkinabe Revolution, by officially inaugurating, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the Thomas Sankara Park, located on Via Ugo Della Seta, in the Montesacro district.
The baptism ceremony, organized by the municipality of the third district of Rome, was placed under the sign of memory and recognition.
It reflects the desire of the Roman metropolis to promote the values defended by Captain Thomas Sankara, namely solidarity, integrity, the emancipation of the popular masses, human dignity and friendship.
Recognized throughout the world as a man of conviction committed to his people and to justice, Thomas Sankara remains a universal figure whose legacy extends beyond the borders of Burkina Faso and the African continent.
In her speech, the Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Italy, Cyrille Ganou/Badolo, recalled that the visionary Burkinabe leader "rightly remains a citizen of the world," a symbol of pride, courage and integrity.
She invited park users to preserve this place of memory, which embodies the commitment and vision of a different future for Africa and for the world.
The ceremony took place in the presence of Their Excellencies Yacouba Diakité and Oumar Ibrahim Sidi, ambassadors of Mali and Niger, who came to show their solidarity, the president of the municipality of Rome, Paolo Marchionne, as well as Matteo Pietrosante, initiator of the project.
Also present were staff from the Burkina Faso embassy in Italy, members of the Burkinabe diaspora, as well as many Roman citizens who are admirers of President Thomas Sankara.
