Farmer Jesús Roberto Miranda Pérez is the first of four members of the Abel Santamaría Credit and Services Cooperative in Los Palacios to join the second model of the Vietnam-Cuba Joint Program for rice production.
On his farm, he planted nearly two hectares with the hybrid cultivar delivered by specialists from the Asian nation, along with the technology package. The productive results of the area harvested so far have exceeded expectations, according to what this small-scale farmer, affectionately known as Nenecho, told Radio Guamá.
"They brought us very good seed. I harvested a piece here, which is now being taken to the industry. The yield should be around 8 tons per hectare. Their inputs are very good. We were severely short of inputs, and now everything is going well.
“Cubans have their own way of working, but they are very strict. If you have to fumigate on Father's Day, you have to fumigate. Things have to be done when they're due, because this is a rice crop with a very short cycle. It only takes 110 days.”
What planting technologies did they use?
“Normal, broadcast. Germination was 100 percent. We've been planting all varieties for years, but since this one had never been seen before, the seed savings per hectare are significant— only 40 kilograms for each one. We used to spend almost four times as much.”
"We also want to plant transplants, to plant a seedbed to sow a couple of hectares, which should yield even more."
Culinary qualities?
“Special, we already tried it, we cooked it, very good rice, hulled, white and it grows.”
