As part of the cooperation between Cuba and Vietnam, the Vietnamese company Agri VMA has already made the first delivery of rice for consumption to the Los Palacios Agroindustrial Grain Company, in Pinar del Río, less than a year after its insertion in this area, to contribute to Cuba's objective of achieving food sovereignty and security.
Agri VMA arrived in September 2024 after the visit of the Secretary General, His Excellency Mr. To Lam, with a rice project that is already showing satisfactory results in the first campaign, such as an average yield of seven tons per hectare.
This is a private company, specialized in animal feed, seeds, agricultural machinery and inputs, which combines three management models in Cuba for the agricultural development of this crop: the exploitation of land in usufruct, collaboration with Cuban producers and the sale of inputs. They have already reached the figure of 1,000 hectares planted in that area of Pinar del Río, and today they are at the peak of the harvest, with the forecast of reaching 2,000 tons of rice consumption only in the months of July and August.
Both entities agreed to deliver 10 thousand tons in the current year and the continuous increase of the plans seeks 50 thousand tons for next year and 100 thousand tons in 2027, in addition to raising the yield to eight and nine tons per hectare, already achieved by some producers.
The current results are the proof of having overcome difficulties with machinery, energy complexities and soil inconveniences. Today they value the hybrid rice yields as very good, with great potential.
Both parties insist that together, we are closer to food sovereignty, import substitution, and the opportunity to generate local development and employment.
The signing of contract No.1 of 2025 for the delivery of the first 300 tons of rice between representatives of Agri VMA and Empresa Agroindustrial de Granos Los Palacios, was attended by Telce Abdel González Morera, Vice Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Cuba, and Mr. Tú Luong, director of Ho Chi Minh City Television (VTV Channel 9), as well as managers, technicians and workers of both companies.
González Morera, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, said: "Achieving the sale of rice is very satisfactory, but we must work to surpass the figure of one thousand hectares planted, advance in the implementation of the second model of collaboration and multiply the benefits generated by the inputs as part of the third model. In terms of ceremonies, we have managed to tie the flag to the halyards (ropes for hoisting), now we must raise it to the top of the mast. A process that has only begun, but we are in a position to continue".
