The smooth-billed ani is a bird in the cuckoo family. It is a resident breeding species from southern Florida, the Caribbean, parts of Central America, south to western Ecuador, Brazil, northern Argentina and southern Chile. On the topic of calls, a high, nasal, rising quer-leek call is the most commonly heard; this is sometimes written as ah-nee and may be the source of the bird’s name.
