Burkina Faso: The Association Générations Solidaires (AGS) is implementing the Age-Friendly Country Initiative (IBF-ADA) to improve the treatment of elderly people
The Association Générations Solidaires (AGS) organised a situational analysis workshop for elderly people, entitled "Friendship with the Elders", from November 27 to December 3, 2025, in Ziniaré.
During these five days, the focus was on examining the living conditions of older people in Burkina Faso. Discussions centered on establishing a physical, social, cultural, economic, and institutional environment conducive to active and healthy aging.
"It is therefore a question of doing everything possible to optimize the health of the elderly, to strengthen their participation in the life of society on all levels, by truly avoiding ageism which refers to discrimination based on age, to guarantee the safety of the elderly, whether in relation to the physical environment or personal safety, and to improve their quality of life ," explained retired Colonel Major Daouda Traoré, president of the Association Générations Solidaires (AGS).
It should be noted that the meeting was attended by representatives of the Autonomous Pension Fund for Civil Servants (CARFO), the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), the National Solidarity and Social Resilience Fund, and the National Council for the Elderly (CNPA).
The workshop concluded with the launch of the Burkina Faso Age-Friendly Country Initiative (IBF-ADA) to improve the treatment of older adults. This initiative included the development of a draft national guide to "Friendship with Older Adults." This document recommends actions to better address the needs of older people, taking into account their physical, health, economic, financial, and social circumstances.
The implementation of these recommendations will be rewarded with the IBF-ADA label, according to retired Colonel Major Daouda Traoré. This label will annually evaluate stakeholders in various fields to recognize the best practices and encourage others to redouble their efforts.
"In each socio-professional sector, for example restaurants, markets and yaars, banks, ONEA, SONABEL, hair salons, municipalities, mosques, churches, temples, supermarkets, artistic and tourist activities, and so many others, criteria have been defined so that people, institutions and structures that want to deserve the label of friendship with the elderly get to work adapting their infrastructure, services, and behaviors to the needs and capacities of the elderly ," explained the president of the AGS.

Dr. Joseph Soubeiga, Director General of Public Health, representing the Minister of Health, commended the workshop for its relevance. He noted that this meeting fully aligns with the national commitment to promoting healthy aging and adapting social and health services to the needs and capabilities of older people.
Speaking of promotion, workshop participants praised the commitment and interest shown by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Burkina Faso, towards senior citizens and their well-being. They cited the organization of the national forum for older persons in 2023 and 2025, which had been suspended for 10 years, as well as the reactivation of geriatric center projects, including the one in Ouagadougou, which will soon be inaugurated.
AGS officials are now placing their hopes on the possibilities of implementing Law 024-2016, which protects and promotes the rights of older people, in this context of multidimensional challenges.
