The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) denounced on December 8 the violation of Burkinabe airspace by a Nigerian military aircraft, which was forced to land in Bobo-Dioulasso. The incident occurred amid heightened regional tensions, marked by the military intervention of Nigeria and ECOWAS in Benin.
The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) has accused the Federal Republic of Nigeria of violating its airspace following the forced landing of a Nigerian military aircraft in Burkina Faso. The announcement was made on December 8th in an official statement read on national television by the Minister of Security and Civil Protection.
According to the statement, the aircraft in question, a C-130 military transport plane belonging to the Nigerian Air Force, was forced to land in Bobo-Dioulasso, western Burkina Faso, due to a problem that occurred in flight while it was operating in Burkinabe airspace. The aircraft was carrying eleven military personnel, including two crew members and nine passengers.
An investigation immediately opened by the competent Burkinabe services established that the aircraft had no authorization to fly over the national territory, thus constituting, according to the AES, a clear violation of its airspace and sovereignty.
Firm condemnation of an “unfriendly” act
The Confederation of Sahel States, which includes Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, condemned "in the strongest possible terms" this act, which it described as "unfriendly" and perpetrated "in defiance of international law and international civil and military aviation rules".
Faced with what it considers a serious infringement on the sovereignty of its member states, the ESA affirms that it has taken enhanced measures to guarantee the security of confederal airspace, territorial integrity, and the protection of the population. On the instructions of the heads of state, it was decided to place air and anti-aircraft defenses on maximum alert.
The press release specifies that, in accordance with a joint declaration by the College of Heads of State of the Confederation dated December 22, 2024, the defense forces are now authorized to neutralize any aircraft violating confederate airspace.
