Mullvad Leta shutting down

So the mullvad browser uses leta as its search proxy obviously.

What will go in its place / what is recommended to be used with its browser instead?

iirc, Mullvad partnered with Tor to develop the Mullvad browser, or at least used that as a starting point. So I would assume they'd just go with DDG like Tor does by default.

The search industry continues to undergo big changes.

  • Which are mostly terrible for user experience and made me switch search engines more than once within the past year. The AI features the big ones introduced are terrible and annoying - especially when they show straight up nonsense in the ‘summaries’

I have my own 4get instance setup (anyone is free to use it if they like https://4get.andmc.ca/ ) it works for what I need, can scrap a bunch of other engines. I dig it. like it better than searxng which never seemed to work for me.

One of the first things I noticed in their repo is a commit titled "removed protection"...

Really? I had to go back to March 2024 to find it

You're right, but there's a few files in the root of the repo that haven't been updated since. So the overview still shows that commit:

Y does the dev's own instance/the main instance, 4get.ca, give you a quote from and photo of Julius Evola?

His conception of Tradition emphasized hierarchical cosmology, qualitative differentiation of being, spiritual authority derived from transcendent realization, and social structures reflecting these metaphysical principles through order, discipline, and hierarchical organization.

Dude must have been fun at parties

The insistence on showing the AI summary at the top of the page is wild to me. They can be dangerously wrong. It seems like a massive liability for what benefit? Just more AI = good? I don't get the thinking there on the part of major search engines

Yeah exactly. I think they're hiding the real reason for this shutdown, this reads like a sorry excuse.

BarHocker @discuss.tchncs.de - 1mon

I don't think they are hiding anything. They state Leta needs a big amount of users to be useful, and that they think Leta will not have them in the future.

Therefore Mullvad focuses on where they can be more effective: Browser and VPN.

Well I think shutting it down before it had any time to accumulate users is silly but yeah, fair enough, I need to put down the tinfoil hat.

Yep, they lack users because they lack image and video search, leta was pretty much in alpha, too soon to complain about the lack of users.

Bummer, I use Leta
