Exactly - there's nothing inherently wrong with a group of people within a country, or even an ethnic group, banding together in order to advance their common interests as a People.
Where do things go wrong? When you ask: "What are the interests of that Nation? And what do you plan to do to advance them?"
An American Nationalist must realize that it is in the best interests of the nation to maintain Imperialism and exploitation overseas, and depending on how they define their nation, exploitation of immigrants and ethnic minorities at home as well.

MAGA communism, or patriotic-socialists in a broader sense, are self-described communists who try to appeal to far-right.
They broadly dismiss anything that's not purely a fight for workers as a distraction, so they're pretty queerphobic & misogynistic, and depending on the flavor they can also be xenophobic.
One of the key figures of the modern movement is Haz with his Infrared collective (which you can see on the meme).
Pretty much every single communist movement reject their ideology, so you're most likely to find them trying to get cozy with the far right, and they get booted from pretty much every leftist platform ranging from reddit to lemmygrad. Even Shining Path apologists get treated with (just a tad) less disdain
