Sure, it’s them saying it out loud, but I would always assume that the American tech giant won’t be upsetting the government (that has threatened to break it up before) that can apply huuuge amouts of pressure to get what it wants.
Also GDPR is a joke. So many companies blatantly flout and defy it. But they don’t get prosecuted or any consequence. It’s simply not enforced.

It's pretty much impossible to enforce GDPR when you don't have indigenous alternatives to US based tech platforms.
