There's a similar story in Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles. The first astronauts from Earth arrive on Mars and are super excited to meet Martians and reveal to them that there is life on another planet. So they go to this Martian village and knock on the door, happily greet the Martian who opens who only proceeds to close the door, completely uninterested.
This repeats at several other houses until they reach a Martian doctor who lets them in. Apparently Martians are telepathic and if one goes mad he projects his own hallucinations to those around him. After the doctor fails to treat the astronauts he kills them to prevent the madness from spreading. When he doesn't see dead Martians lying on the ground he kills himself, because he clearly was infected.
