DRDO Successfully Completes User Trials of Akash-NG Air Defence Missile System

The DRDO has achieved a remarkable success by conducting successful test of Akash-NG, which is the next version of existing Akash Variants.

It is a Surface to Air Missile. The system's capabilities were validated by its performance when it intercepted multiple aerial targets at different altitudes and range.

It is said to enhance IAF's Aerial Defence capabilities. The succesfull testing of this system opens door for its induction in Indian Armed Forces. It has proven itself as a worthy defence system to intercept incoming fighter jets, missiles and drones, further adding to India's multi-layered defense system. Equipped with an indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker and propelled by a solid rocket motor, it represents a leap in indigenous technology.

Development of Akash-NG began in September 2016 with the goverenment funding ₹470 crore for its development. Many Indigenous compnies like Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) contributed to its co-development, they jointly designed and manufactured its major components like Multi-Function Radar (MFR), Command and Control Unit, and Missile Launch Vehicle (MLV).

Its range has been extended from 70-80Km, which is a significant leap from 25-30Km in previous versions. It can engage 10 targets simulataneously, deployment is swift: from transport to ready-to-fire in under 20 minutes, with a single missile launchable in 10 seconds and a salvo of three in 20 seconds; reloading two canister stacks takes about ten minutes.
