Every year I crochet a bunch of snowflake ornaments and send them to friends and family. This year I experimented with rings, which I think turned out great!

Wow, that looks gorgeous!
I would love to try something like this myself. Do you know of any patterns or instructions I could use to start with?

I have a Christmas snowflake pattern book. I did a few but mine always looked a little limp. It’s inspired me to take another look…and buy some starch
I really like her patterns in general. I've also found many textured or 3D snowflake diagrams on Pinterest. Those are often a bit harder to interpret and you may have to take some creative liberty with them.

Looking at the ring has given me a thought, if you are confident with your snowflakes…I am not 🤣. Anyways thought was the snowflake wires used to make jewelled snowflakes. I wonder if the ends could be turned to hold a bead and then the crochet up and between.
Thanks for the inspiration DerEntenjager. I enjoy seeing others Christmas creations.
I don't know enough about beading! But I really like the idea of adding beads to these and I bet it wouldn't be too hard. Maybe that's what I'll try next year!

I was thinking more as these as an inner frame. You would likely need at least a bead at the end to anchor to.
It would take some thinking for the patten though.
In terms of how they are usually used there are lots of inspiring out there and they turn out pretty. I usually collect old necklaces/bracelets through the year to use up. Just remember you always need 6 of each bead.

Do they stay on the ring or is that just something to help give them form while you’re making them?

They stay on the ring as an extra element of decoration. If I don't use a ring, I would starch them when I'm done to keep them flat and in form.

I like the layers. It almost tricked me into thinking it was knit at first. How big are the rings?

This ring is 4 inches. I've been trying to find smaller ones but my local craft stores don't carry any.

They are all flat I think, not 3D and as detailed as the OPs. But is a starting point.
Thanks for passing that along! I'll definitely pull from that next year. And I would definitely recommend starch!

With beads they end up like this. https://www.countrybeads.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/snowflake-wire-frame-examples-of-finished-beaded-snowflakes-600x600.jpg
