Unfortunately, Discord mods are mostly hobbyist laypeople who are not equipped to deal with dicey discussions. I can understand not being willing to deal with that in your free time.

Yeah. Honestly about as awful as 40k with 95% less self-awareness
I'm mostly mad that the cool dommy plant ladies I heard about aren't cool or hot at all. I'm only attracted to three dimensional characters, I can't believe these submissives would make a perfectly good alien species and then neuter their presentation by being all apolitical

I'm assured that fics like No Gods, No Masters and The Place Where We Can Stop Running have three-dimensional characters but honestly I don't buy it. All of the interesting science fiction themes are either detailed in an unbelievable manner or outright forbidden. Rule 11 makes it so you cannot write stories with children in it, nor breeding or having kids or anything. Even fucking Marc Laidlaw included that in Half Life 2 and we're supposed to completely ignore it???
Space communism where there are no politics makes for incredibly boring aliens with no conflict or depth, unsurprisingly

I actually appreciate that rule for a kink setting. I think people like Elon Musk who sexualise breeding are disgusting and one step removed from pedophiles. And if you allow child characters in your smut, those people will try to infiltrate your community. Got any other examples?

This author makes some iffy points about trans people and needs to be told how to separate constructive criticism from kink shaming, but otherwise I found their piece very informative and interesting https://archiveofourown.org/works/55277848

Politics smut with content rules enforced via Discord and a wiki that people write 4k word essays about seems like it would make for a very intense can of drama worms

All science fiction is political. Taking politics out of sci-fi just produces a thoughtless reification of the dominant local culture. In this case, it looks like a thoughtless reification of imperialism.

You would not believe the rabbit hole you sent me on today. Or maybe you would. Here's the end of it: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/36083095
