In an interview with the Interfax news agency on Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov expressed his country’s concern over U.S. actions against Venezuela.

He also said Russia is maintaining dialogue channels with the United States in multilateral forums, primarily at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Ryabkov said he regretted the escalation of tensions surrounding Venezuela, “which does not inspire confidence that the coming year will be more stable and calm than the previous one.”

“Contacts with the Americans cover various topics, aspects and issues. I cannot say that we have a specific dialogue on this matter, but it is also raised during relevant working-level contacts,” he said.

On Tuesday, Moscow denied that it had ordered the evacuation of its embassy in Caracas amid growing tensions between the Caribbean nation and the United States.

U.S. President Donald Trump said this week it would be “smart” if Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro were to step down. In response to this veiled threat, the Bolivarian leader said “the world would be better off” if the U.S. president focused on issues in his own country.

Washington began increasing pressure on Venezuela in September with naval squadrons operating near Venezuelan waters and the sinking of boats allegedly used by drug traffickers. These actions later escalated into the blocking of oil tankers in the region.

Last week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the situation surrounding the Latin American country is potentially very dangerous.

“President Vladimir Putin recently spoke by phone with President Nicolas Maduro. Of course, we call on all countries in the region to act with caution and avoid any unpredictable developments in the situation,” he said.
