Please be kind to retail workers this Xmas

Yours sincerely,

Someone who's working every day from tomorrow until 4 Jan (except the 30th, yes, including Xmas and New Year days)

Jo Miran - 21hr

You can't force me to restrict my kindness to just the holidays.

And just to retail workers

Same goes for restaurant workers. We were at one of our favorite nice restaurants, sitting at the bar. It was busy, so it was slow. That makes sense. It's 1830 on a Friday. No big deal, we were sitting at the bar, they're busy. There was this older couple (50-60?) Who were just bitching. Complaining that things were taking longer than they felt they should. Some gems.

  • "These steamed buns were terrible", meanwhile their plates were scraped clean.
  • "This bottle of prosecco isn't good. I'm not paying for it...." While they were 3/4 through it. Then they finished the bottle.

The husband berrated the bartender who (one of three or four) who was busy all night. We've had her and she's lovely. Berated her for service taking too long, and apparently how she had left for a while, and how that was unacceptable. I'm guessing she left to, ya know, eat dinner and take her break.

They were complaining about how bad of an experience it was. But stuck around for 20m after they paid the check...

After they left, another group took their spots, and we overheard them shit talking them multiple times. The bartender looked visibly upset while she was working. Eventually Audrey told her that it was shitty how he treated her. Turns out she was thinking about it all night after (this was 1.5 hours later). We assured her they were just shitty and that we've had an amazing time everytime we've been there.

Maybe try being kind to retail workers all year round?! If you want to be bold just be a decent human being all around to everyone.

I'll just avoid them altogether. That's the nicest thing I can do for them

As someone who has done the front line retail slog over the holidays you have my sympathies and my thanks.

I am very glad to be out of retail hell now, but the christmas eve shift I did a couple of years ago was depressing with the amount of people that would come in looking for their children's main gift, like a PS5 or an Xbox, and then yelled at us because we ran out of stock of those high-value items on Christmas eve. The worst was someone who started screaming at one of our nicest staff members that he had "ruined Christmas" for her and her whole family when she came in ten minutes before closing and we didn't have the laptop she wanted for her son in stock. Some of the younger christmas temps got told off for laughing at her and it took two security guards and the staff member activating his bodycam for her to leave.

Ugh that sucks! People buying things have actively worse behavior during Christmas here. Hang in there and I hope you have time off in January to recover!
