I have audio processing issues that make me hear everything at equal levels of attention.

This means I can't be in an echoey restaurant without earplugs, but it did help me become a professional orchestra conductor and everyone tells me it's surprising how well I can notice tiny details from individual players. Go figure.

I think of it like a flash light. Normal people have the beam spread out, they can see more but with less with focus on any one thing. We have the beam real narrow so we can see one thing really well, but that is it. Also the flashlight is held by a phantom hand we don't always control.
