First World Problems

Solumbran @lemmy.world - 2day

It's a hard challenge to manage to be very racist while at the same time trying to help against discriminated.

T00l_shed @lemmy.world - 2day

They fucking pulled it off though

I like that you can tell the artist was very offended by someone else saying they were offended by something, then turned around and made a racist portrayal of the global south. A perfect ouroboros of being offended over people getting offended by your offensive content.

65
Kami - 2day

And you are in that ouroboros it seems. Ironic.

Observing that a work of art is racist doesn’t mean you’re offended by it in the way the comic is talking about. It’s offensive because it’s racist, not because I’m particularly offended by it. As far as racist works of art go it’s mid at best, both in art quality and shock value of the racism itself.

10
Kami - 1day

Considering this particular work of art racist though, it's being offended by it.

There is nothing actually racist about it, I could even argue it's the opposite of racist, but probably it's neither.

Whatever it is, it did its job judging by your reaction.

Catoblepas - 1day

Sorry, I don’t think you’ve given the art proper thought or analysis. It being racist isn’t really debatable: the clothing and jewelry the woman is wearing isn’t connected to a specific region or ethnic group, it’s just vaguely exoticized and othered. I assume the artist was going for a head wrap, but it looks like they have zero idea of what that actually looks like and made a turban instead (typically male headwear). The background also portrays a stereotypical drought scene, with a harsh sun and parched grasses, implying famine along with the thin, sickly, half dressed child. Not even touching the fact that these caricatures of black people in the global south suffering were being used as puppets for the artist’s soapbox, not to say anything meaningful about the lives or needs of the caricaturized people being portrayed.

None of that required “being offended,” that’s just how thinking and analyzing art works.

If you’re missing the racist overtones here it’s because you’re either ignorant to them or so used to it that it didn’t even register.

"I'm not offended"

proceeds to write wall of text about how it should be offensive

Ashelyn - 1day

You can see bait and acknowledge what it's trying to do without engaging with it on its artist's terms. Do you disagree with the above commenter's assessment? You seem really stuck on a specific point, trying to paint people as offended when it's really just a matter of identifying what's there.

7
Kami - 1day

I am just acknowledging that the poster is continuing the ouroboros of being offended.

Do you want to join them?

5
Catoblepas - 1day

I just took an art history class and spent months writing thousands of words analyzing elements like colonialism and racism in artwork. That was a first pass, basic analysis. How TikTok fried is your brain that a basic rundown of the visual elements of an artwork shuts you down? Literally less than 200 words??

7
Kami - 23hr

So you basically took a class in finding things offensive?

4
Walk_blesseD - 1day

anyone who engages critically with media is automatically offended

How do you remember to breathe?

Doc_Crankenstein @slrpnk.net - 24hr

People like them vote and that is deeply unsettling

Thank you for your service

I'm actually having a good chuckle here at how offended you are. Calling this racist is also a bit far-fetched. The artist is using stereotypes to make fun of a shitty parenting technique. Try being less offended and don't over interpret a 4-panel Internet comic.

The comic is still shit though. Not funny in any way. They should probably have gone with America being in a similar or worse state than many central African countries in terms of political corruption and exploitation of its population.

HazardousBanjo @lemmy.world - 2day

Seems like some racist bullshit meant to take a jab at generally leftist people.

If we wanted an accurate depiction of pussy, crybaby snowflake assholes, she should've referenced Trump and his supporters. Never has there existed a more emotionally charged group of 1-ply skinned weirdos. in history.

36
Kami - 2day

Pussy? That's sexist...

4
HazardousBanjo @lemmy.world - 1day

Oh look, another dipshit Trumper.

What's it like supporting a child rapist that protects other child rapists?

3
Kami - 1day

AHAHAHHAH that was really unexpected.

Anyway I'm not a Trumper nor a Christian, so I've never supported pedophiles in my life.

You should probably turn off the internet for today buddy.

Take care of yourself.

6
HazardousBanjo @lemmy.world - 1day

Oh, so you're just an insufferable cunt like any Trump supporter?

Got it.

Have a nice life existing as a nuisance to everyone you ever interact with.

TIHI

serpineslair @lemmy.world - 2day

sighs...

That's enough internet for one day, I can't even decide if I agree with this or not, and I think I feel a headache coming on...

15
DominusOfMegadeus - 2day

Agree or disagree, it’s pretty much lose lose if you admit it. I’ll see myself out.

8
kazaika @lemmy.world - 1day

Can someone explain to me where the problem is here (for most of the other commenters) i dont get it

6
Doc_Crankenstein @slrpnk.net - 24hr

Just a rehashing of the braindead concept of "how dare you recognize the flaws of current society that we live in and demand that life could be better, more equitable, or just! Don't you know that others have it worse? So shut up and be complacent with your lot in life instead of trying to improve society!" with the addition of a strawmen argument that intentionally depict the opposition as just "idiots complaining about nothing"

15
Ibuthyr @feddit.org - 14hr

Whenever a kid wouldn't eat up, or complain about the food it is (or was) a common thing to tell them that kids in Africa have it worse and they should think about them when tossing away all the food. It's shitty parenting that was prevalent in the 90s (I know from experience). This comic flipped things around.

6
deadymouse @lemmy.world - 1day

The meme probably ridicules the fact that people in Africa live much worse, that they can starve to death at any moment, and people in America, for example, live much better, but still complain about life.
