Context: many penitentials written mostly during the early middle ages, ascribe punishments for various sins. Interestingly enough, many sinful actions are described by the authors themselves as pagan. Not only that, but almost all of the "pagan" sins are similar to rituals recorded both in the pagan antiquity but also later folk culture, like drinking, feasting, going dressed up during christmas and practicing augaries.
