It's a rule that the existence of vegan shoes implies the existence of carnivorous shoes

lugal @sopuli.xyz - 9mon

Many shoes contain leather or wool or something. Vegan isn't just about food

109
huppakee @lemm.ee - 9mon

I know right, I'm surprised there are so many people here who don't appear to get that. If I look at the image I assume the seller of this pair of shoes just slapped a buzzword on but vegan shoes and clothing are a thing and since when is everything that is not vegan carnivorous? Cheese and honey are also neither, right.

29
EmptySlime - 9mon

Jokes like this aren't to imply that there are only two options. It also implies the existence of pescatarian shoes for example. The joke is that you apply other related terms to the situation, usually the most absurd of them. In this case carnivorous was probably chosen for the implication that the shoes themselves are carnivorous and would eat you if you wore them.

5
huppakee @lemm.ee - 9mon

In that case I just didn't get the joke because a meat-eating shoe would make a good joke

2
setVeryLoud(true); - 9mon

So, mostly plastic with some plant materials?

8
JohnDClay @sh.itjust.works - 9mon

In this case, wouldn't vegan be the opposite of organic?

2
lugal @sopuli.xyz - 9mon

No. Plants are vegan and can be used as material for shoes

6
JohnDClay @sh.itjust.works - 9mon

But they aren't, vegan shoes would be made of polyester/nylon/other plastics.

2
drinkwaterkin @lemm.ee - 9mon

They're usually not, at least at this time. More R&D needs to go into plant-based materials for more options. Even so, leather itself is also anything but "organic."

1
JohnDClay @sh.itjust.works - 9mon

The one in the post looks like it's polyester and foam. Why would plant based materials be better? I would think ideally you'd make the plastics out of ethanal and algie, but with how much processing goes into it, I'd hardly call that organic.

1
drinkwaterkin @lemm.ee - 9mon

Did you watch the video?

1
JohnDClay @sh.itjust.works - 9mon

I didn't see how it was relevant.

1
lugal @sopuli.xyz - 9mon

I have vegan shoes made of pineapple leaves. Checkmate atheist

1
bdonvr @thelemmy.club - 9mon

Vegans avoid animal products outside food too?

41
distantsounds @lemmy.world - 9mon

Yes.

36
bdonvr @thelemmy.club - 9mon

Sorry didn't mean it as an actual question. More an incredulous tone

24
potter2010 @lemmy.ca - 9mon

Depending on the reason for being vegan.

For animal rights/ethics, yes.

For health/climate, potentially less so.

8
irelephant [he/him]🍭 - 9mon

Genuine question: Is avoiding leather really that great? Leather seems much more durable than plastic, and its from a part of the animal thats really just thrown away anyway.

1
🦄🦄🦄 - 9mon
  1. making the leather is a horrible process, making skin into the product you know requires a lot of chemicals that aren't great for the environment

  2. Leather is not necessarily a byproduct but a coproduct.

6
irelephant [he/him]🍭 - 9mon

Thanks for answering!
For the environment thing, would making leather clothes be worse than making plastic clothes?

1
rc__buggy @sh.itjust.works - 9mon

Vegans love microplastics.

edit: lol, love you cud chewers

4
ZILtoid1991 @lemmy.world - 9mon

"Vegan" originally meant "vegetarian + no non-food animal products", which later got distorted into "vegetarian", then thanks to crooks promoting the "carnivore" diet, "person that actually eats their veggies". No really, the last one started to spread from gymbro forums after one of them said "um, ackchually, fiber is carbs too".

1
HertzDentalBar - 9mon

Vegan aka Synthetics. It's just a fuckin buzzword.

Now if it was Oil and Animal free It would kinda cool.

31
rc__buggy @sh.itjust.works - 9mon

Something tells me the label "Plastic" wouldn't sell as well.

19
slaneesh_is_right @lemmy.org - 9mon

I have shoes that is printed from algae, they are vegan and synthetic free

7
HertzDentalBar - 9mon

Which company? I'm interested in seeing what they got because that's pretty sick, i doubt they are sketchers though 😂

1
slaneesh_is_right @lemmy.org - 9mon

They are called vivo barefoot

3
irelephant [he/him]🍭 - 9mon

That is actually really cool.

1
blackris @discuss.tchncs.de - 9mon

No, vegan aka not made with shitty glue made of animal bones. It is not just a buzzword.

3
HertzDentalBar - 9mon

Hey horse Jesus died for our glue ...

2
demunted @lemmy.ml - 9mon

Yeah this is just plastic washing.

3
HertzDentalBar - 9mon

Shit it even says it right there "machine washable"

1
DerArzt @lemmy.world - 9mon

That would be kind of wild! I wonder if it's possible with that mango leather I've heard about.

1
HertzDentalBar - 9mon

My wife said the same but we never looked into it.

1
Pennomi - 9mon

This pair of shoes was made by happy vegan child labor instead of sad carnivore child labor.

23
Cactus_Head - 9mon

I am pretty sure that called leather

19
Pondis @lemmy.world - 9mon

Vegan "leather" is made of plastic. Plastic is a by product of the oil industry. Oil is made out of dinosaurs. Plastic is not vegan.

Take THAT PeTA!

Also huge eye rolling and /s

14
🦄🦄🦄 - 9mon

Ackschully oil is made from plant matter, not dinosorus 🤓

9
Draconic NEO - 9mon

Algae and Plankton technically, though some of those plankton (Zooplankton) are animals, not plants, they're all mixed together and baked under high pressure, no way to separate the zooplankton from the phytoplankton.

1
lobo @lemmy.world - 9mon

i don't know man, that looks synthetic to me

what would dinosaurs think of this "vegan" shoe?

11
Neuropain - 9mon

How does it being synthetic have anything to do with it being vegan?

And a dinosaur would think "cool shoes".

24
butwhyishischinabook @lemmy.world - 9mon

He's just being a pedantic asshole

13
Depress_Mode @lemmy.world - 9mon

Those fabrics are made of plastic, which is derived from oil, which forms over long periods of time from buried decaying plant and animal matter. 70% of the Earth's oil is from the Mesozoic Era, which encompassed the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods, so formed during a time when dinosaurs lived and jokes about oil being made of dinosaurs are common. Oil is actually made of plankton rather than dinosaurs, though.

10
don - 9mon

My guess is that the lack of leather constitutes being vegan.

8
🦄🦄🦄 - 9mon

Also lack of animal based glue.

4
lobo @lemmy.world - 9mon

plastics are usualy from oil, and oil is from dinosaura

although googling it now it seems it was disproven

2
protist @mander.xyz - 9mon

Almost all fossil fuels consist of plant matter laid down in the Carboniferous Period, before dinosaurs even evolved

16
Neuropain - 9mon

Yeah it's almost all plant matter I think.

9
idiomaddict @lemmy.world - 9mon

Even if it wasn’t, it’s a valid point to argue that found roadkill is vegan (but still not safe to eat, RFK Jr), because no one is exploiting anyone else. There are lots of reasons for vegans not to embrace petroleum products, but the well-being of the animals and plants that formed the petroleum isn’t one of them.

7
lobo @lemmy.world - 9mon

when you're trying to explain your stupid joke and get akchualied 😑

3
idiomaddict @lemmy.world - 9mon

Sometimes I get the phrase “I’m autistic” sung to the beat of the electric slide stuck in my head 🤷

2
Draconic NEO - 9mon

Also looks to be made of leather too, which is kind of a bigger problem.

1
daggermoon @lemmy.world - 9mon

Aren't most cheap shoes vegan? It didn't occur to me this is something I have to watch out for

9
kungfuratte @feddit.org - 9mon

There are a lot of leather shoes. :)

4
WIZARD POPE💫 - 9mon

How mqny cheap shoes are made of real leather?

2
drinkwaterkin @lemm.ee - 9mon

It's possible, and if finances are a struggle you just kind of have to make your best guess in some cases, or buy used. Most of the time when shoes have leather, they advertise it pretty boldly, so that helps. Still, you never know - for example, what are the adhesives made out of? That's why vegan certifications are important, a lot of things can be easily hidden, and a lot of companies aren't particularly clear on their use of animal products even when reached out to directly.

Going vegan means learning to have to put everything under a microscope. The word 'vystopia' exists for good reason.

2
dejected_warp_core @lemmy.world - 9mon

No. Instead, it implies that eating this shoe is better for your health than eating a non-vegan one.

6
BigDanishGuy @sh.itjust.works - 9mon

Do we have a term for individuals that refrain from eating shoes? Because vegan shoe or not, I identify as a person who doesn't eat shoes.

2
irelephant [he/him]🍭 - 9mon

Now I can eat shoes without feeling guilty.

4
Draconic NEO - 9mon

@essell
Some shoes have leather in them, in the past it was almost universal that shoes would be made of leather, but with the advent of modern plastics and rubbers most shoes these days aren't made of leather anymore, since leather is more expensive.

Side note, in the past shoes were much more repairable and there were actually people known as cobblers who would make and, get this, repair shoes. Nowadays many modern shoes, especially sneakers, are built in a way that makes them significantly less if not completely unrepairable, which really sucks. We should be able to repair shoes just like in the old days #righttorepair

@196

3
Railcar8095 @lemm.ee - 9mon

I'm not ready to commit to vegan footwear, but I'm happy with my vegetarian sneakers.

3
LordGimp @lemm.ee - 9mon

You seen those alligator skin cowboy boots? Thems carnivore shoes
