pixeltree - 12mon

I went to a board game convention a month ago, it was the first time I've girlmoded for something major. They put their own signs over the bathroom signs explaining that both were gender neutral and the only difference was urinals vs stalls. That made it soooo much easier on me and I was very glad

134
RageAgainstTheRich @lemmy.world - 12mon

I'm a dude and i want stalls every time. I HATE pissing in a urinal next to a bunch of other people and get piss splashed on everything. So so so many bacteria.

70
spireghost @lemmy.zip - 12mon

There are well-designed urinals now that don't splash back. Add to that, If there's a divider, then the urinal is convenient, quicker and imo cleaner because you don't have to touch the stall door or lock to close it and you're not pissing on the seat or sitting down. It's literally no-contact

22
Damage @slrpnk.net - 12mon

I love urinals, carefree pissing

18
ebolapie @lemmy.world - 12mon

And free cake!

9
i_dont_want_to - 12mon

That's a breath mint, silly goose.

3
Glide @lemmy.ca - 12mon

If I can, and it's clean, I always prefer to sit down to piss. I just want a break, man. Leave me alone for 5.

15
YarHarSuperstar @lemmy.world - 12mon

I think it's so stupid that this is taboo.

7
samus12345 @lemm.ee - 12mon

I've heard about it being taboo, but I never understood how anyone would even know a guy's doing this.

6
sem - 12mon

You can see feet under the stall door AC the recognize the shoes, or you might be walking into the restroom at the moment they exit the stall. That's how you would know.

I think it's dumb too

2
samus12345 @lemm.ee - 12mon

And how do you know they're not taking a shit?

3
Danquebec @sh.itjust.works - 12mon

Real men shit in the urinals.

3
AlexWIWA @lemmy.ml - 12mon

I want a urinal in a stall

7
joelfromaus @aussie.zone - 12mon

Wish granted. It’s a stall with a urinal but the walls and door are plain clear glass.

4
SpaceNoodle @lemmy.world - 12mon

Maybe you should do something about that UTI

4
Faresh @lemmy.ml - 12mon

In my experience public toilets are so badly maintained that I'd rather avoid touching any porcelain besides that of the sink. That's one of the main reasons I go for urinals. It's also often the most direct way to achieve my objectives if my only goal is to urinate, unless there are other people in which case I hover around waiting for one urinal to become less crowded or just use a stall if it doesn't look disgusting.

4
Queen HawlSera - 12mon

Indeed, I'm a furry and a few conventions I go to, even in red states, have temporary rebranding of the bathrooms to gender neutral for the duration of the convention as a requirement that the Hotel must maintain in order to keep the convention's business.

And since furries are either suspiciously wealthy or poor, but dedicated, it's a wise economic decision for said Hotel.

31
frezik @midwest.social - 12mon

Which happens to be exactly what the place in OP does.

9
pixeltree - 12mon

I had assumed, hence my loosely related story

9
hedders - 12mon

That is a sensationally good idea.

8
horse - 12mon

I don't think only gender neutral bathrooms is the way to go. There should be an all gender bathroom and a woman's bathroom. Unfortunately we live in a world where women may still feel understandably uncomfortable with men in the bathroom with them.

Note: To be clear I'm not saying the women's bathroom should be for cis women only, it should only exclude men.

5
Proprietary_Blend @lemmy.world - 12mon

Here's a little known fact, gender neutral bathrooms are just bathrooms.

107
deadbeef79000 @lemmy.nz - 12mon

The gender neutral bathroom's already in your house!

64
yonder @sh.itjust.works - 12mon

They are also in your neighbor's house too! Get the pitchforks!

24
Localhorst86 @feddit.org - 12mon

I can see the video where someone with a microphone asks people on the street:

"More and more households in the US are implementing gender neutral bathrooms, what is your opinion on this?"

5
Danquebec @sh.itjust.works - 12mon

My son goes to a gender neutral school, my daughter goes to a gender neutral daycare, I work in a gender neutral office, and shop at gender neutral shops.

14
Joeffect @lemmy.world - 12mon

It drives me crazy to see a single occupancy bathroom in a public space labeled as gender neutral... Just say bathroom... Or even worse they went out of the way to change it from bathroom to gender neutral... Looking at you taco bell...

12
Zink @programming.dev - 12mon

Gendered bathrooms should not need to exist because bathrooms should have some dammed privacy.

In the US, there’s a door for boys and one for girls. Behind each is a giant room with some sinks and some toilets that may as well be using cardboard and tinfoil for privacy.

Go somewhere more pleasant like Sweden? You have a short hallway with 3 or 4 doors on each side, and behind each is a small restroom including a sink and a mirror.

Every real and maga-hallucinated bathroom problem largely solved.

66
NιƙƙιDιɱҽʂ - 12mon

I love the idea behind gender neutral bathrooms, but I really wish they weren't just a band-aid on the problem that is disgusting American bathrooms.

I didn't realize how much better it could be until I went to Japan. Floor to ceiling walls, doors with curvature where the door and wall meet completely eliminating door gap, buttons to play music or water sounds...wtf America. Might as well be pissing in a prison in some bathrooms here.

16
Coriza - 12mon

And if you wanna save money on too many sinks and such there is already a solution for that. Many places have the sink and mirror outside the bathroom and shared between both gendered bathrooms.

7
njordomir @lemmy.world - 12mon

If you want to save time, money, and water, one of my favorite venues has toilets that have sinks on top of them so the water used to wash hands is collected in the tank as grey water to flush the toilet.

4
Slovene @feddit.nl - 12mon

If you want to save even more time, piss in the sink while washing your hands.

2
Coriza - 12mon

Yes, they are pretty neat, at least the ones that pop up on the Internet

1
MsPenguinette @lemmy.world - 12mon

If I was near here, I’d go to this place just because of this

59
frezik @midwest.social - 12mon

It's pretty great. It took over the spot of a gay bar in town which had evolved to be more of a general bar while being explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly. They had to shut down for various reasons. I/O took it over and has largely continued being LGBTQ+ friendly, but now with more pinball tables and old arcade games.

40
populustree - 12mon

where?

2
sudo @programming.dev - 12mon

Its in the image, r/madisonwi, Madison Wisconsin.

6
populustree - 12mon

please excuse am retarden

2
Danquebec @sh.itjust.works - 12mon

The fact public places need to explicitely say they are LGBT friendly makes our society feel dystopian. It's as if they had to say they are black people friendly or Jew friendly.

1
frezik @midwest.social - 12mon

Well, for what it's worth, I don't think they make a big deal of it. In fact, the old bar had a sign to effect of "everyone is welcome here, but this is a queer space, and if you can't handle that, you will be asked to leave". I think that was taken down, but the spirit is still there.

2
Queen HawlSera - 12mon

The fact that stalls exist kinda makes me question why, outside of poorly aged "values" we even have gendered restrooms.

58
YarHarSuperstar @lemmy.world - 12mon

I don't know if it's the reason, or just a side effect, but I'm pretty sure it prevents a bunch of sexual assault, or at least makes some people feel safer.

20
Godnroc @lemmy.world - 12mon

I feel like that's the only justification I've ever really heard, but I find it to be rather flimsy. It assumes that someone willing to assault someone else would be deterred by a sign. It also assumes that assaults only happen across genders and not within, which is either very narrow-minded or willfully obstinate.

Personally, I would think individual unisex bathrooms that each contain their own sink would be the safest option. You enter fully aware and lock the door behind yourself, only leaving once you are fully aware and alert again. Given that the common area between stalls is essentially public, you could have cameras observing the entrance without invading privacy and capturing anyone attempting to force their way in or tailgate someone entering a stall. Better, safer, gender neutral.

58
Queen HawlSera - 12mon

It also assumes that assaults only happen across genders and not within, which is either very narrow-minded or willfully obstinate.

Ya know I've actually sat down and talked with my cisfriends on how they feel about the whole thing, way way back when the bathroom scares started... One thing they brought up that I didn't even think about was "Do these Republicans not know that lesbians exist?"

11
Walk_blesseD - 12mon

Do these Republicans not know that lesbians exist?

Of course they do, they were using the exact same talking points against (cis) gay people before that proved to be unviable at the time, and they'll drag the culture war back to that front if they get what they want with regard to suppressing trans people's rights to exist as members of society.

8
Queen HawlSera - 12mon

Sadly this rhetoric works with transpeople because it's harder to convince the masses we were "born that way", when our existence seems to require medical intervention.

As long as Republicans can say we're weirdos cutting our cocks off to go along with some "New Age Fad", we won't be taken as seriously as cis-gays, and it's hard to argue otherwise because that unfortunately requires nuance that looks too much like "This isn't what it looks like" to idiots who will not take the time to understand medical science.

It also doesn't help that because we live in an era of fake news and multiple choice narratives, people are more willing to call bullshit when you tell them that transpeople have existed throughout human history.

I'm worried that there is no winning this time as they've successfully created a narrative where to the masses, Trans Rights and Women's Rights, is a "Pick one you can't have both", scenario despite that being as far from the truth as you can get. (Not to mention that Republicans do not value either. Which is the beauty of their little shell-game)

1
TankovayaDiviziya @lemmy.world - 12mon

My former college has gender neutral bathroom in the gym. I have never heard any issues in the many decades that it has been there. Besides, the wall of the toilet stalls are really high and there are no gaps underneath the stalls to dissuade peeping. Just do how my college did with gender neutral bathrooms.

11
AdrianTheFrog @lemmy.world - 12mon

If space efficiency is a priority, I would say just take a normal restroom, add better locks, stall walls that actually go the full height and all of the way to the ground, and have a urinal section around a corner so that it is fully out of view from the (security camera monitored) common area where the sinks are

5
MystikIncarnate @lemmy.ca - 12mon

This is the justification.

My only comment to that is: the "women's washroom" sign isn't going to stop an attacker.

32
Queen HawlSera - 12mon

Right? A No Guns sign isn't going to stop a shooting, but a Women Only sign will stop all rape forever!

Republican "logic"

20

33

"period blood mural" is a great punk or trash metal band name

6
SoleInvictus - 12mon

Haha, I can tell you never cleaned retail bathrooms... *cries*

29
Cracks_InTheWalls @sh.itjust.works - 12mon

I had to clean the women's bathroom at a Burger King. This will pretty quickly correct any misconceptions you have about differences between the sexes re: bathroom etiquette, we're all god damn animals.

19
A7thStone @lemmy.world - 12mon

I cleaned bathrooms at an upscale retail store for five years. The women's room was consistently worse. You could tell they just didn't care because they didn't have to clean it, toilet paper and feminine hygiene products left wherever, piss all over the seats from hovering, and the sinks were just covered in garbage. But when the men's room was worse, it was way worse. Holy shit is that literal shit everywhere? God why are there fingerprints in it, did you do that barehanded? Why the fuck is it inside the toilet paper dispenser?

14
Elgenzay @lemmy.ml - 12mon

There's this place i go to where they have 2 single-person bathrooms, but they're still gendered. Maybe this is the reason

i genuinely still don't get it. but if u think it's funi to let me live in ignorance and not explain the joke, then leave it..

2
maria [she/her] - 12mon

~nununununu!!!~ please understand that I'm angry at the reddit post with the annoying youtube title, not the repost here on Lemmy. On thus post, "No" is a pretty good title I think. it's not overselling it, it makes sense within the context of the funi and it's not an overused buzzword.

the REDDIT POST on the other hand! it goes out of it's way to be annoying. it repeats the the same meaning using different words. it pretends like this is a big thing: some employee replying with no to some comment about thir game. It's boring, overblown and who cares. It would have been funier if the reddit person just reposted the post and didnot add a dum and long subtitle to it. WHAT IS THIS? prepare for my next game, named Calm Compass: A side adventure in a parallel dimebsion. (very out of context, yes, srryy)

have I now become the one to overblow and overreact? am I now saying the same thing with many words? YES! ON PURPOSE!

im sori next time I will ramble shorter.

8
breakcore @discuss.tchncs.de - 12mon

Anders Holmvik is one of the three main characters in the show Workaholics.

The character is played by actor and co-creator of the show Anders Holm.

Vik or vig, in Scandinavian languages, means inlet or bay and is rather common as part of a placename. Therefore also somewhat common as a family name, since these tend to reflect origin of a given family.

I can recommend the show, it is funny, albeit rather stupid.
