Steam is 'an unsafe place for teens and young adults': US senator warns Gabe Newell of 'more intense scrutiny' from the government if Valve doesn't take action against extremist content
No company is capable of moderating all of the things a parent wants to keep from a child. That has to be a household controlled issue, and it takes a lot of work to monitor what your kid is doing. It is the same as anything connected to the internet. Some people are crazy/mean/bad influences/dangerous. No moderation will be perfect, so it is more important to understand what your kid is doing and give them guidance. Otherwise, ban them from interacting entirely.

Maybe so, but I don't think it's too much to ask that they moderate things that would be moderated on Reddit or even Facebook. Like give people permanent community bans for illegal shit, death threats, Nazism, things that would get you permanent community bans on other platforms.
Not being like or worse than 4chan isn't asking a lot.

They're moderated by the dev and publisher and they have the ability to grant moderator status to anyone for their games.

So basically they aren't moderated at all. Also steam community forums by Valve themselves almost always without exception have shit moderation. Even if Valve did also do it, I have little confidence they would address the issue.
