Don't work for big companies. Try to go small studios or Indie. Although I guess this advice is actionable only for people who don't have any commitments.
But what other way is there apart from these? Maybe switch industry and go into pure software?

Yeah, that is - unfortunately - how it usually goes. The average game developer stays in the gaming industry for ~7 years and then gives up and does something else entirely.
