Saturday Anime Night, 8PM EST: Yuyu Hakusho (1992) eps. 85 through 90, and Aardman’s Santa-substitute animated feature Arthur Christmas (2011)! (CWs inside)

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Yuyu Hakusho (1992), one of the all-time classics of shonen anime, featuring a teenage boy who is killed by a car to save a child and then given superpowers in recognition of his selflessness. He goes back to Earth and fights bad guys. Expect a lot of glowing and powering up to defeat smug villains and the like. Episodes 85 through 90 tonight.

After that is Arthur Christmas (2011), a holiday-themed animated feature from British studio Aardman, the group behind such classics as the Wallace & Gromit series and Chicken Run (2000). Unlike those, this is a CG-animated feature, produced in collaboration with Sony. It follows Santa’s clumsy son, Arthur (James McAvoy), who sets out on Christmas Eve to deliver a present to a child that his dad missed. Will he succeed and prove himself worthy of being Santa’s successor? I guess we’ll find out. Excellent reviews for this one, so let’s check it out. Director is Sarah Smith, whose only other directorial credit is the boy-and-robot comedy Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021); maybe we’ll watch that sometime, too.
