Previous eurovision winner returns their trophy in protest

linky

::: spoiler spoiler Nemo, the winner of Eurovision 2024, announces they are returning their trophy in protest of Israel’s 2026 participation:

“The contest was repeatedly used to soften the image of a state accused of severe wrongdoing, all while the EBU insisted Eurovision is "non-political." And when entire countries withdraw over this contradiction, it should be clear that something is deeply wrong.” :::

I still feel like this sort of action, well good in a vacuum, is still too little too late. that's Eurovision 2024, and Nemo was explicitly targeted by BDS activists for participating in the event, especially considering they were threatening to boycott before changing their mind later. it just feels like the entire world is waiting until enough people have died that opposing the genocide is both too late to make an impact but just in time for us to see that they "cared".

maybe I'm cynical maybe I'm not, I'm just fucking tired.

EDIT: Corrected pronouns, apologies

One day, everyone will have always been against this.

Yup, westerners are always on the wrong side of history, then jump to the right side when the dust settles. Like South Africa. All western countries supported apartheid, even sent weapons to prop up the regime (sound familiar?) But now they'll all claim that they were against it and even fought to BRING IT DOWN.

Even the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia did some colonialization... which our history teacher proudly let us know about.

Like they just can't help themselves. Why do some people cling so fondly to these acts against humanity, like it's a trophy and why continue supporting them in the current time, it's so gross.

yeah, like returning prize immediately, on the scene, would have been way more pog, but still, it's something in the world of the morally blind etc

especially considering he was threatening to boycott before changing his mind later

Nemo is non-binary, uses the pronouns they/them

Fair points, and i agree, but you could have made all of these points without misgendering them.

Entirely besides the point, unintentional misgendering is still misgendering and should always be corrected.
