For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Color Purple (1985), an African-American saga based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning 1982 novel of the same, following forty years (from 1909 onward) in the life of a Southern black woman (Whoopi Goldberg) after she is forced, at age 14, to marry a much older man (Danny Glover). Things go badly from there as she tries to escape to Africa to reunite with her sister in Africa. Oddly enough, we have only watched only one Spielberg film on the ‘tube before this, that being Duel (1971). This was Spielberg’s first attempt at Oscar bait, and it did not quite succeed at winning Best Picture, though it was nominated for that and ten other categories, without winning a single one.

After that is Little Amelie, or the Character of Rain (2025), a French animated feature about a Belgian girl living with her family in Japan during the post-war period. She befriends her Japanese housekeeper and learns to love life and all its beauties amidst her alienation as a foreigner. She has a vivid imagination that results in a lot of pretty pictures. Excellent reviews for this one; it is currently ranked #64 on Letterboxd’s Animation Top 100. This is the feature-film debut of both of its directors, Mailys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang, who do not have much work to their names otherwise.
