For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Holiday (2006), a Christmas-themed rom-com about an American (Cameron Diaz) and a Brit (Kate Winslet) who decide to swap houses at Christmastime for a fresh start following their recent respective breakups. Uh-oh they both meet a handsome, charming man (Jude Law in the UK, and Jack Black in the US) who make them not want to return after all. Uhh, Jack Black? Well, okay, whatever you say. Hilarity ensues with the usual meet-cutes and misunderstandings. A wine-mom classic, and really popular on Letterboxd for some reason. Okay, fine, we’ll watch it. ‘Tis the season. Director Nancy Meyers also helmed The Parent Trap (1998), which we previously watched.

After that is Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), the debut feature from renowned Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho, and a fitting thematic follow-up to 101 Dalmatians (1996) from last week. A bored bougie professor living in the sterile, cold, dull world of middle-class occupied Korea finds himself gradually driven insane by the barking of a nearby dog. He decides to break out of his ennui by killing it, an action that almost immediately causes him to jump off a slippery slope of dog-murder, and pulls those in his apartment building into his scheming, as well. Yes, it’s the director’s signature style, mixing brutal violence, capitalist alienation, and silly comedy all into one. We’re gonna get bonged.
