Amerikans could actually know who owns their politicians, the US mandates a fairly high amount of transparency about politicians' earnings, assets and stock portfolios. You can just look this up, just as it's not hard to look up the funding of supposed NGOs and find out they get their money from a CIA front or the Heritage Foundation. I do this regularly. I wish i could do that with politicians and orgs in my home country. Nobody else does, tho, which is why the US allows itself this openness in the first place. They can afford to say "look, we're up front about who buys us" because they can count on everybody saying "what can you do, they are all corrupt anyway and there is no better system out there".
