For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Seventh Continent (1989), an Austrian psychological drama from provocative auteur Michael Haneke, the guy behind Funny Games (1997), Cache (2005), and The White Ribbon (2009), all of which we previously watched. The film follows the typical, uneventful lives of a middle-class family over the course of three years. Well, maybe not as uneventful as they seem, since they gradually isolate themselves from the world around them in pursuit of a sinister, cruel end. Will no one stop these hidden Jokers from carrying out their nefarious scheme? This is Michael Haneke, so probably not, but I guess we’ll find out. This is considered one of his best films, and is one of Austria’s highest-rated films on Letterboxd.

After that is Wicked: For Good (2025), the second part of Wicked (2024), which we previously watched. A prequel to The Wizard of Oz, it continues to follow the witch Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who has now rebelled against Oz in the name of its oppressed animals, straining her friendship with fellow witch Glinda (Ariana Grande), who is a public icon. Being effectively leaders of opposing factions, they are now destined for conflict, with an angry mob rising within Oz to take out Elphaba, who they view as a being of pure evil. Direct Jon M. Chu returns from the first film. Reviews are alright for this, though not as good as the first. Nevertheless, it is already one of the biggest box-office hits of the year.
