i've been meaning to watch that, but i was honestly a little gunshy about it. after having my mind completely blown by the blowback episode about korea years ago, i am wary of media that touches on korean history which makes its way to the west via established avenues. in the US, nobody "knows" shit about korea except SK is the "good guys" and DPRK is "bad", which speaks to the efficacy of our propaganda.

though, frankly, it's like the storytellers of occupied korea want these stories to be told, but find ways to skirt the censorship with subtext and allegory. train to busan, etc. it's hard to think of a major korean movie from the south in the 21st century that doesn't feature an absolute asshole capitalist as a evil villain who like has thugs doing gangster shit or is just an unrepentant scumbag.

there's a badass korean horror flick that came out last year titled Exhuma. on the surface, it's a horror story about supernatural stuff 👻 FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE 👻, but the subtext is a pretty damning critique of the phenomenon of korean collaborators with japan still to this day enjoying power/position, and incredible wealth after WW2 as part of the changover to US control.... which was all too happy to back the compradors and let them amass dynastic fortunes.

if you watch it and you're not a competent east asian language differentiator, make sure to get good enough subs so you can know when japanese vs korean is being spoken because that's kind of a thing in the plot. also, content warning, it's legit pretty creepy and scary lol. death/blood/violence, etc. plenty of the nuanced cultural reference are lost on me, but it still gave me the heebie jeebies in some sequences because it's well executed.

i've recommended it to a lot of people IRL, and nobody ever watches it. sadness
