For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, it’s Gaspar Noe’s old-people dementia drama Vortex (2021) and Disney animated animal-cop sequel Zootopia 2 (2025)! (CWs inside)

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Vortex (2021), the latest drama from renowned French auteur Gaspar Noe, the provocative director behind such works as Climax (2018) and Enter the Void (2009), both of which we previously watched. This time, he takes on the subject of old people, and the inexorable challenges they face at the end of their life. Octogenarian Italian giallo director Dario Argento (Suspiria [1977] and Inferno [1980], among others) stars, in a rare acting turn, as a retired author who begins to feel his age when his wife begins to go senile. Drama ensues as they try to get their inadequate families to help out. This is considered one of Noe’s best works, and received rave reviews after its screening at Cannes, so let’s check it out.

After that is Zootopia 2 (2025), the much-anticipated sequel to the Disney blockbuster Zootopia (2016), and sure to be one of the most popular films of the year. A good-quality camrip has just appeared, so we may as well watch it now. Bunny cop Judy Hopps and her fox friend Nick are forced to go undercover to unravel the sinister plot of a literal snake. The mammalian population of Zootopia does not trust the reptiles, and so, the film takes on another racial-conflict metaphor. Director Byron Howard returns from the first film, and co-director Jared Bush previously helmed Encanto (2021). Excellent reviews for this one so far.
