What is fanime?
A fanime (etym. blend of fan + anime) is basically when someone makes an anime-style cartoon show by drawing frames in MS Paint; compositing them in Windows Movie Maker with pirated music, stock sound effects, and dialog recorded in one take on potato microphones; and posting the result to YouTube. This isn't necessarily accurate of all fanime, but the throughline is in any case that fanime is a form of democratized amateur animation combining anime aesthetics with "Internet Ugly". The style is most associated with the Western anime fandom of the mid-2000s through mid-2010s, where it was often difficult to distinguish sincere fanime shows from parodies of the genre.
What's the chef cookin' tonight?
Elemental Goddess is a fanime based on the popular magical girl series Sailor Moon. Redcuban1959 suggested that we watch it. Popular among both trolls and sincere fans of fanime, the series was created by diamant88 from Germany and was published between 2007 and either 2008 (according to Fanimetion) or 2010 (according to Fanime Realm); several of the videos have evidently become lost media as diamant88 distanced himself (yes, him-self, dudes rock) from the project later on.
Plot summary: In an unspecified Middle Eastern country, the short-tempered Goddess of Virtue, Mandana, bestows special rings upon five girls — Nadine, Jessica, Stephanie, Susan, and Tina — to allow them to transform into Sailor Scouts themed around the elements. The girls, accompanied by Amrita, the Goddess of Peace, must use their new powers to fight a gang of evil space aliens known as the Demonic 5, and awaken new goddesses to save the planet. This series includes a lot of questionably-handled themes of religion, faith and interfaith coexistence, and is described as having a nonsensical and hard-to-follow plot.
We will be watching all available content from the series tonight:
Episode 1, part 1 (6 minutes)
Episode 1, part 2 (10 minutes)
Episode 1, part 3 (6 minutes)
Episode 2 (24 minutes)
Special: Fundamentalism Power! (11 minutes)
≈ 57 minutes of scheduled content.
Episode guides indicate that "Fundamentalism Power!" has two parts; I don't know if the video I got a hold of is just the first part or both parts combined. I guess I'm leaning towards and certainly hoping it's the latter but we'll find out together.
In any case, we do NOT have access to the third and final episode, nor the other two specials, "Jessica meets Sailor Moon" and "Gypsy's Revelation". If they ever resurface online I'll show them then I guess, but the situation isn't looking very hopeful.
