Sunday Kino Night, 8PM EST: British LGBT blackmail drama Victim (1961) and Park Chan-wook’s adventurism crime comedy-thriller No Other Choice (2025)! (CWs inside)

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Victim (1961). It is a British LGBT-themed drama, and a protest and the draconian sodomy laws then in place. The film follows a married, secretly gay lawyer, who becomes the extortion target of a blackmailer, who takes pictures of him with another gay man. He goes to the police to pursue the blackmailer, but must conceal his own homosexuality in the process, and pretend that he was just a straight man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Drama ensues. God Damn the UKKK: The Movie. Director is Basil Dearden, whose horror/comedy anthology Dead of Night (1948) we previously watched. This is considered one of his best works, so let’s check it out.

After that is No Other Choice (2025), a crime comedy-thriller from renowned Korean auteur Park Chan-wook, the guy behind such other films as Oldboy (2003), Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), The Handmaiden (2016), Joint Security Area (2000), and Thirst (2009). A chronically-unemployed paper mill manager is gradually Jokerfied by a cruel, humiliating job market; eventually, he snaps, and decides to start eliminating the competition by violent means. Satire and dark humor follow from there as his schemes escalate to ever-more-ludicrous levels. Critics consider this one of the best films of the year.
