For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Yuyu Hakusho (1992), one of the all-time classics of shonen anime, featuring a teenage boy who is killed by a car to save a child and then given superpowers in recognition of his selflessness. He goes back to Earth and fights bad guys. Expect a lot of glowing and powering up to defeat smug villains and the like. Episodes 67 through 72 tonight.

After that is The Dog of Flanders (1997), a feature-film retelling/condensation of the 1975 anime series of the same name, itself based on the 1872 novel of the same name by pseudonymous English writer Ouida. A 19th-century orphan boy lives in poverty with his grandfather in Antwerp. The boy dreams of being an artist, and enters a contest, only to be met with resistance from the backwards villagers, who all irrationally hate him. Thank God he has his trusty dog around to give him a hand. No tragedy will ensue here, I’m sure. Director Yoshio Kuroda also helmed the aforementioned 1970s series. This has a really high rating on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.
